Resolve to keep your home healthier

Why your New Year’s resolutions fail.
 Dear Jeremy ,

When I used to go to the gym regularly, I would always notice big crowds the first 2 weeks of January. The first time it happened, I told a friend, “Great, this place used to be nice a quiet at this time.” He said, “Just wait a couple weeks, it’s New Years.”
Sure enough, the gym got to be a quiet place of refuge again about the 3rd week of January. So why do so many fail at their New Year’s resolutions?
Here’s what Psychology Today tells us:
“Timothy Pychyl, a professor of psychology at Carleton University in Canada, says that resolutions are a form of “cultural procrastination,” an effort to reinvent oneself. People make resolutions as a way of motivating themselves, he says. Pychyl argues that people aren’t ready to change their habits, particularly bad habits, and that accounts for the high failure rate.
Another reason, says Dr. Avya Sharma of the Canadian Obesity Network, is that people set unrealistic goals and expectations in their resolutions.”
Not really ready to change and unrealistic expectations…sounds like some of the goals I’ve set for myself in the past!
One tool I’ve found incredible effective was something I learned from the Zig Ziglar organization. Keep reading below and I’ll share it with you.
Resolve to start the new year off with a clean and healthy home!
Are you keeping your carpets, rugs, tile and upholstery professionally maintained yearly? If not, now’s the perfect time to start this good habit and clean up after those holiday guests.

4 tips to get out pesky pet stains

Here are 4 Do-it-Yourself Pet Stain Removal Steps

1. Do it NOW. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove. It isn’t always convenient to clean up a pet stain, but the problem will be greatly reduced the quicker you act. The stain could be permanent in just a few hours, especially with light colored carpet and rugs.

2. Use the right equipment. Use a small, hand-held carpet spotting machine or wet vacuum to extract urine, vomit, or feces. If you find the stain while still damp, you MUST extract the liquid BEFORE rinsing or using spot remover. Popular brands to look for are Bissel, Little Devil, and Little Green Machine. For wet vacuums, go to any hardware department and ask for wet vacs or shop vacs.

3. Use the right cleaning agent AFTER the liquid has been removed. Use a low residue spot remover if the stain is fresh or an enzyme spot remover if the stain has been in the fiber for more than a few hours. Call us and ask about two really good products we have available. Never use bleach. If you are using an enzyme, allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes or according to the label. An enzyme actually digests the bacteria associated with the odor in urine and works well for spots that have been in the carpet for more than a few hours.

4. Rinse the spot with plain water and extract the water with your wet vacuum or carpet-spotting machine. This can be done by rinsing with water from your spot removal machine or simply pouring a glass of water on the area and extracting with your wet vacuum.

Then, call a professional for complete odor and stain removal!

Carpet spot and odor removal tips

Always Do This When Cleaning

Some tasks, such as removing a spot from a carpet, getting rid of an irritating pet odor from the family dog or trying to find the best cleaning solution for the toughest jobs can actually end up causing more harm than good.

Spot removal

When we find a spot on the carpet, there are two things we tend to do. The first is to put way too much cleaning solution on the spot, saturating it and even getting the padding wet. This just spreads the spot and causes trouble in the future. The second is we tend to scrub way too long and way too hard. This can fray the fibers and you can’t fix that. So when you get a spot, put some solution on a white towel and blot. Never scrub or rub.

Odor removal

The biggest question when Fido or Fluffy does their thing on the carpet is “How do I get it out?” That’s not always easy unless you get to it right away. Urine will penetrate into the carpet, the padding and even the subfloor, and when it dries, over time it becomes sticky and smelly. Some will put powdered carpet deodorizers on those spots, which only gums up the carpet and creates a residue very difficult to remove. Like with spot removal, blotting the area quickly is usually the best remedy for the do-it-yourself types.

Using products

When one product works well and you find another one works well, too, the tendency is to mix them. Remember, never mix ammonia and bleach. Both are effective products on their own, but mixed together, they become deadly. Other products on your shelf could, if mixed together, create toxic fumes that can cause harm to your family. Always follow the directions on the label.

Home Care Winter Maintenance Tips (even for Florida)

Great winter home maintenance tips (even for Florida!)

Prepping your home for storms that are either predicted or that can occur at any time is the best defense against wind, water and related storm damages.

Tip #1: Inspect the windows

No, not in the glass itself (you can see that easily and would have already replaced broken windows.) Check the weather stripping, the caulking and edges of the glass. Ensure no air is getting in or out. This is easier to check on a windy day. Hold a tissue paper up to the areas you are inspecting to see if there is any movement. If so, repair that area. Replace the caulking or weather stripping if necessary. professional carpet cleaning in sarasota

Tip #2: Get climbing…

… up on the roof, that is. But keep it safe! Hire someone if you aren’t able to physically do this yourself or if there is any danger of falling. You (or someone) needs to inspect your roofing materials, areas around chimneys, skylights, and vents… anywhere that water can intrude and cause problems. Be sure to repair any damage before the weather turns bad.

Tip #3: Clean the gutters

Dirty, cluttered gutters don’t do their job very well. Rain and debris in the gutters means they clog up and can cause all kinds of problems for your home. Get out the ladder or hire a pro to ensure your gutters are clean and ready for winter.

Another tip for those that have your professional carpet cleaning in Sarasota this time of year:

In Florida in December, we often don’t need to run our air conditioning. Some don’t even run ceiling fans. While this is great for our electric bill, it’s not great for damp carpets. So when you get your carpets cleaned, be sure to set your AC to 70-75, or if it’s too chilly, set it to the fan setting so those carpets can dry faster. Run those ceiling fans too, at least for a few hours so everything can get dry.

Tile and Grout Cleaning

Tile and Grout Cleaning

Tile and Grout CleaningThe desire to have tile in your home can have many sources. You may want to help eliminate the issues that come from allergens, or you may want to cool your home down. No matter what the reason, tile and grout can have just as many issues when it comes to keeping them clean.

Grout, in particular, can be difficult. This is where tile cleaning services can come in handy. Even with daily cleaning things can get trapped in the grout between the tiles of your floor. It can give your home a dingy look that can be frustrating. In addition, to the grout the tile can also change color over the years even with regular cleaning.

In order to keep your tile and grout looking as new as possible consider making use of tile cleaning services. These services are designed to help your tile look like brand new by getting deep into the tile and grout to lift dirt and stains that have worked their way into the surface.

A good service is a great way to clean your tile and grout as well as help restore the brilliance of its original color. Grout discolors because of detergent and dirt, which settle when you clean. A good cleaning service will use an advanced cleaning system and a high-powered vacuum to ensure that nothing settles back into your grout and tile. A truly professional clean will ensure that your tile and grout look brand new.

Ceramic Tile Cleaning Tips Worth Knowing

Ceramic Tile Cleaning Tips Worth Knowing

ceramic tile cleaningCeramic tiles add color and life to any room, IF they are clean. Yes, no matter how much you dislike it, it’s important that ceramic tiles are thoroughly clean all the time. So if you are new to it, here is some ceramic tile cleaning information you need to know.

Avoid using harsh cleansing agents to clean ceramic tiles as it may only damage them. Do not use cleaning supplies which can damage the tile or grout as grout holds the tiles together and protects against residue and moisture.

Use the right brushes or brooms

Machines used for scrubbing floors, and abrasive cleaners can end up scarring the glaze and even damages the grout in between tiles. Instead, it’s okay to use brushes or brooms meant solely for cleaning ceramic tiles. Just make sure its bristles are firm enough to get the job done without any scratches.

An all-natural sponge is great to use for cleaning wet wall tiles as moisture accumulated on the walls can lead to mold developing on the grout. A sponge not only removes mold, but also keeps the place dry to prevent any mold development.

Avoid bleaches or gritty cleaners

Avoid using gritty cleaners and bleaches as they make the pattern and color fade. Use natural cleaning products instead which keep the tile wonderfully clean while preserving its finish. Damaged or worn grout between the tiles should be repaired as soon as possible lest moisture reaches the flooring under it and lead to expensive repair bills.

A little cleaning effort on your part helps make your tiles look as great as it was first installed. If you don’t’ have the time or patience to do all this yourself, don’t worry. You can always call in professional cleaners to do it for you like Overturfs. Call us at 941-301-9555 for one of the best cleaning experiences ever to your house!

Oriental Rug Cleaning Sarasota

Why have your Oriental Rug cleaning Sarasota in our facility versus just having any carpet cleaner clean them at your home?

Why have our trained, reputable staff clean them versus choosing a company from an internet search?

6 Top Reasons:

1. Natural fibers are typically used in rugs, which have to be treated very differently than synthetic fibers found in most wall to wall carpet. Many carpet cleaners do not have sufficient training to work with natural fibers like wool.

2. Cleaning technology is different. Rugs have the potential for dye migration and fiber distortion. This can be controlled much better in an environment like a rug washing facility.

3. Variety of methods may be used. Different rugs may require different methods of cleaning. In our facility we can evaluate the safest method to clean your rug effectively. This makes us the premiere spot for Oriental Rug cleaning Sarasota.

4. Dusting. Professional dusting equipment is used in plant, to remove those deep down microscopic particles that vacuuming alone won’t get.

5. Liability. Hand knotted rugs often have a high value. Is the cleaner properly trained and insured? Do they know how to protect the flooring underneath the rug if they are cleaning it at your home?

6. Dry times. In plant cleaning allows plenty of dry time with high powered air movers. This ensures that issues are prevented that can occur with prolonged drying.

We hope you’ll think about these 6 reasons the next time a carpet cleaner is in your home and you’re thinking about having them clean the rugs while they’re there.

We are happy to pick up and deliver your rugs in Manatee and Sarasota counties. You can even drop them off yourself if you’re near our East Bradenton facility. Call us at 941-301-9555 to find out more or to schedule a pick up or a time to drop them off.
